If I Had a 90s Soundtrack . . .

Now, I have no talent for putting playlists together. The secret to making one song flow properly into (or even sit amicably next to) another is beyond me. But if I had to put together a compilation album that sounded like the 1990s as I heard them, these two tracks--as different as they seem--would definitely make it in . . .

+

And I bring this up now because I recently heard them come together in a single song.

What's that? You don't believe me? Oh, ye of little musical imagination . . .

Whomever Take That are paying to manage their career these days deserves every freaking Euro. They're as slickly marketed and overproduced as they ever were--more obvious now that the music has (arguably) got worse--and it seems that I still can't get enough.

I just love Love, Love.

I'll have to listen to these later because I'm at my moms and she fell asleep in her chair and I don't want to wake her, but I can't wait! I love the xmen theme song. I've downloaded it for my cellphone ring tone.

It's easy - play them both at the same time really loud.

I feel shut out.

Why are cats so popular?

I haven't heard this one before. But I just listened to it twice, so I guess I like it too. :)

Apparently you can take the girl out of the 90s, but you can't remove her love of boybands. :-)

Nice to see that Robbie Williams decided to play nice and, er, cash in with the other four.

Jenny -- Let me know what you think after you've heard it! =)

Terry -- I wonder the same thing about cats myself.

Syrin -- I don't remember it at all from the movie--but then again, I wasn't listening for it. I'm surprised by all the comments on YouTube that are calling this Charles and Erik's love song. I can see how it would fit, but to me it's more of an anthem for all the X-men, especially the first generation.

Shaz -- Have you seen my Top 5 Boy Band Concert Medleys? =P

Now that Rob is back, I actually feel that Take That have lost the balance that made its comeback so great. =/ I mean, I love him, but he does tend to steal the spotlight from everyone else. It's not his fault, though: I think he was born to be a star.

I never really followed Take That very closely. I've got an old Gary Barlow solo single stashed in a box somewhere and a Rob Williams track on my ipod and that's the extent of it. I will say that, to me, Gary was the talent and Rob was indeed the star.

Just saw your boy band medley post. Love the cheesy goodness of it!

There's no doubt that Gaz is talented, but I think he's also very limited in what he can pull off. Not to knock the man completely, but my main criterion for talent is versatility. (Yes, sometimes I drop the cheesy facade and get critical. =P) While I respect his achievements, a lot of his songs--if they haven't been co-written--tend to run into each other like wet paint in my mind. Ouvre to ouvre, I think Rob's body of work speaks more strongly for the man behind it.

Thanks for checking out the boy band post! =)

As I am, at best, a casual fan of both gentlemen, I defer to your opinion.

By the way, I noticed in the comments on the boy band post you indicated you were not a fan of Boyzone. I'm curious what kindled your wrath against them.

Disclaimer: All I know about Boyzone is that their song "Picture of You" was in the Mr Bean movie and that Stephen Gately appeared in the Doctor Who audio Horror of Glam Rock in 2007.

To be completely honest, I don't have much against Boyzone (except that I don't find them a tenth as great as they've been touted to be). But the commenter who brought them up had been getting on my nerves for some time, and I dashed off my reply to her with more heat than I should have. =(

Thanks for satisfying my curiosity. :-)
