"Weird Al" Yankovic Song Smackdown, Round 4
(Revisit Round 1, Round 2, Round 3A, and Round 3B)

This is it, gang!!! The mini face-offs we've been having were simply practice or today, when we you will be deciding the ultimate "Weird Al" Yankovic Song. But before we proceed . . .

Last week, Trigger Happy did that preemptive strike thing with Canadian Idiot and won. Despite the fact that Canadian Idiot is one of my personal Top 5 "Weird Al" Yankovic Songs! (Hey, it's a Green Day thing. =P)

All right, now that that is out of the way . . .

VS.

Vote, baby, vote!!!

Yeah, I know it's a tough decision to make and that most of you will probably want to take the rest of the week to think about it. Especially since the wrong choice will end up haunting you or the rest of your lives.

But not as much as it will end up haunting me! Next week, in celebration of your support for Shredded Cheddar, I will post a video of myself singing and playing the winning song on my guitar! (Yes, I'm regretting this already . . .)

The Saga Begins. I'm pretty sure that was my first introduction to Weird Al, and so will always be my favorite.

I always remain true to the classics- Eat it. Looking forward to that one LOL!

I'm a big star wars Geek, (I even sing this text when they play the orignal American Pie song (or Madonna's cover) on the radio) so I'd love to hear and see you sing: 'The Saga Begins'!

Saga all the way!! Does Talon's vote count as well? Check out the lastest post on my nonbookish blog if you need any persuading to let him vote: http://dustyus.blogspot.com/2010/08/life-savers-chewbonga-and-dark-vader-oh.html

E, you have got to be the bravest girl I know! Can't wait to hear your rendition!

Eat it.

I assumed (going out on a limb) your appreciation for 60's surf overruled your punk sensibilities. So much for presumptions.

I have read the first two comments, and they suggest a tie. Of course, in the next three it could go either way, I just don't know! I might even tie it up again, by accident!

What Whould I Do?

I'd rather listen to Saga any day. So that's my vote.

Too difficult, but I'll vote for The Saga Begins. It almost makes me like the prequels.

Looking forward to the results! You're a braver blogger than I am.

Ummmm, gang, you all do realise that you're voting for the best song by Weird Al, not the best vehicle or humiliation for Yours Truly, right? =P

Eat It is quintessential. Can't be helped. Practice up!

No school like the old school. Eat it FTW.

When I posted this, I thought I wanted one song to win because I had practiced it more. But now that I'm uncertain enough to be practicing both, I see that the other song is actually easier . . . in everything except the ending. One song has a nice "dismount" and the other, well . . . we'll see.

Dauvit, you must be a kid!

The DH and I were getting ready to be at odds over this (which would have caused us to conveniently cancel each other out) but I've gone back to both vids and now I dunno.

Both are musically very tight parodies. We oldsters who can remember when a dorm bathroom recording of Another One Rides The Bus was the funniest thing on radio are, I think, especially aware of this. Al is always good, but it's that attention to detail that makes him master of the craft.
Conclusion: Dead heat.

Both videos are excellent. Eat It parallels and parodies the Beat It video with deadly accuracy. Pie was around before the age of vid, so they seem to have opted to go for a sort of American Bandstand theme (which was about as close as it got to MTV back in the day.) Of course, that makes it a bit easier to parody since you can kinda do your own thing. One problem: somebody needs to remind Al that when you fake playing the guitar, it's more convincing if you pretend to change fingerings occasionally.
Conclusion: Eat It, by a neck. Though Al makes a darn good young Obi-Wan (with a hint of Don McLean, yet!)

Both sets of lyrics are very good. They use the parameters of the music well, and neither goes in for cheap fudges or off-point filler lines--and that's not easy to do. I think Pie is a more difficult song to parody well, but I also think Eat It is top-notch parody even if the foundational material is easier. I can't decide whether it's easier to retell a story (staying with the rhyme and meter isn't necessarily so) than it is to take a theme, make a slight alteration in it, and then come up with your own story. The latter gives the parodist more freedom and creative control; the former more structure and material to work with.
Conclusion: Dead heat.

Thus I find myself listing ever so slightly to Eat It. But I'm kicking and screaming all the way, so if you really would rather sing Saga then, hey-- crying voter fraud has gotten to be a parlor game lately anyway.

Wow. This decision really, really pained you. (I should feel guilty about that, but I'm also happy that the two finalists are both such strong contenders.)

But one last thing: I think Al wanted to make the fake guitar playing as obvious as possible. =P

PS--At this point, I really don't know what I'd rather sing! I'll be equally freaked out no matter which one wins, I think.

Ooooh; I wish you hadn't put that thought into my mind! Nonetheless, I'm staying with Eat It.

As C alluded above - I vote for Beat It! Michael Jackson is to "Weird" Al what Beatrice was to Dante -- an inspiration for some of his best work!
