Arnold Schwarzenegger Movie Smackdown, Round 4
(Revisit Round 1, Round 2, Round 3A, and Round 3B.)

Now for the moment you have all been waiting for . . .

Terminator poster vs. TotalRecall poster

I wanted to call them "You're Terminated" Two, because it totally fits this final round, but then I worried it would influence the vote unfairly.

(Ha! Obviously, I didn't worry too much, because I'm mentioning it here. LOL!)

No new comments from me, as I've said all that I have to say about both films in the previous rounds.

It is truly your turn, Dear Readers, to make cheesy history happen! The combox/polls will be open for the rest of the week. Remember to use this power wisely, and let the Spirit of Schwarzenegger guide you as you cast your vote . . .

The Terminator for me!
Total Recall is a good movie, but let's be honest: playing a robot is Schwarzenegger's calling. His stilted acting is just what makes the terminator believable and what makes his role in Total Recall stiff. And The Terminator has the best onliner of all Schwarzenegger movies!

Thanks, Sully!

I can't figure out what you mean by "best one-liner": it's either "F*** you, a******!" or "I'll be back!"

Both of them have had such classic appeal over the years that he has used them in other movies, giving many viewers some very meta moments, I'm sure! =)

Pondering...deeply pondering.

I'll be back to vote.

(Did that just influence my vote?)

Judging by how few responses this has received since I put it up twelve hours ago, it seems that you're not the only one who wants to think more deeply about this! Which I find surprising. I had thought everyone following this smackdown pretty much knew which movie he'd vote for from the beginning--and in the event it was eliminated, which movie he'd vote for instead.

tangentially on topic: Total Recall: the Musical

It's something else to tab in my spare time (So, thanks!) . . . but is it also your vote? =P

ninjapeps said...

no, my vote goes to The Terminator.

I'm afraid I *really* don't know either movie... maybe if you could shed some light on them from the Scholastics point of view? What Would Aquinas Say? You know, a *Catholic* perspective... ;-)

Where have you been the past two rounds, Bat?!?! =P

And is that an implication that my perspective isn't "Catholic" enough?!?! You could review how each finalist did in the three previous rounds and see which one seems most Catholic to you.

I don't want to say more because I don't like swaying people's votes . . . ;-)

Total Recall. It was my initial vote but was doubly-confirmed after I decided that Terminator was a rip-off of this Soviet film from 1946 (the thievery begins at 1:30...) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-LBzIwJxKBQ

I totally forgot about the "F*** you, a******!"
so that makes it the movie with the best TWO oneliners!

Christopher: Are you trying to get banned? (I'm asking because I never know with you. It's my great tragedy.)

Sully: He has the fewest lines in the movie, but they are the ones everyone remembers! =)

Belfry Bat said...

I can't believe that's a soviet-era film. Surely they wouldn't draw attention to the mutability of photographs?

Maybe they were trying to convince people that the little robot man was real? You know, a triumph of Soviet technology in the area of robotics!

I was here the other day, but had to turn away before making a pick. Too difficult....

But....I think....I'm going to have to pick.....Gah!

OK, The Terminator. It's a simpler film.

Final answer.

Paul Stilwell said...

Ah, screw it. The Terminator.

You can't beat its past/present dynamic. And scenes like the one where Reese starts spouting off the truth to Sarah (and to the viewer) for the first time about the Machines and the future and how in a short while everything is going to be changed have greatness written all over them.

Paul Stilwell said...

Sorry, that should read "past/present/*future* dynamic". Sheesh.

The Mike: Thanks for your vote! I appreciate it!

Notice that I remembered the "The" this time? ;-)

Paul: One day I might write a post about why The Terminator is the greatest Time Travel movie of all time and why John Connor didn't have any "other" fathers "before" Kyle Reese was sent back in time.

Thanks for your vote, too!

(I hope nobody was feeling pressured to vote for The Terminator just because it's clearly one of my favourite movies of all time!)

christopher said...

No pressure here, ma'am.

I'm always confident about your objectivity, Christopher. Indeed, my knowledge of your character tells me that your strange feelings about Terminator fans didn't influence your contrarian vote at all!

Paul Stilwell said...

Mine was completely free of any pressure - as I'm sure everyone else's was.

Though my vote may not be totally objective per se. I may be unconsciously associating Total Recall with the night that my Dad got me and my brothers pizza and rented Total Recall, and while me and my brothers were fooling around I threw one of the couch's pillows at one of them and it knocked over the lamp sending it crashing to the floor and I got sent to my room with no pizza and no movie.

Now that's sad. =( I feel your youthful pain.

Total Recall for me. ^_^

See I voted!

+JMJ+

Yes, you did! =D Thank you so much!

I know someone else will be happy to take note of your vote. =)
